WHC Story: Andrew Ammerman

After a lifetime of living in D.C. and around the world, Andrew now spends the majority of the year in Hawaii, but he remains closely connected to WHC and values his unique relationship with each of our Rabbis. “I cannot envision a life without being a member of Washington Hebrew,” Andrew explains, “We truly have it all.” As a supporter of WHC’s nationally-recognized 2239 program, he regularly audits “12 Jewish Questions” and finds something new and inspiring in the discussions every time. Learning from Rabbis Lustig, Fischel, and Miller is a joy, he shared. Each of the rabbis is able to find “the shafts of light in the readings and teaching that illuminate Jewish values and thinking.”

Andrew’s connection to WHC is long and deep—his grandmother was active in Sisterhood (now the Women of WHC), Rabbi Gerstenfeld married his parents, and Rabbi Weinberg consoled him and his family following the painful death of his brother in a car accident overseas. “I cannot imagine a rabbi provided more comfort in a very difficult time than Rabbi Weinberg was able to do,” Andrew remembers. He feels fortunate to have been a lifelong member of the Temple. “WHC has been there for me at every stage and has never let me down. I want to reward that generosity with my own, and becoming a Sustaining Member was an easy decision.”

Sustaining Membership is both an act of tzedakah and a reflection of faith in our shared Jewish future. Our Sustaining Members help give the gift of membership to struggling families or young professionals just starting out and ensure that seniors on a fixed income can maintain their connection to WHC.
