January’s Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend will be filled with wonderful activities, including a very special MLK Shabbat on Friday, January 14. WHC welcomes clergy from nearly two dozen churches and mosques in the D.C. area and magnificent voices from several choirs join our cantors to lift us up with song as we honor the legacy and ideals of Dr. King.

Headshot of Angela AlsobrooksOur guest of honor this year is Angela Alsobrooks, Prince George’s County Executive. Alsobrooks is the first woman to hold the position, and the first Black woman elected to County Executive in Maryland history.  She has launched several programs to support the immediate needs of residents and businesses, including more than $40 million in grants to restaurants and other small businesses, and a nearly $40 million Emergency Rental Assistance Program. Additionally, Alsobrooks created the Police Reform Work Group to conduct a thorough study and review of the County Police Department and is already implementing dozens of recommended actions.

WHC’s MLK Weekend continues with an Amram Scholar Series talk on Sunday, January 16 with LaNitra M. Berger about Irma Stern and the Racial Paradox of South African Modern Art: Audacities of Color, and concludes with our annual Day of Service, Monday, January 17.
