At a time when Facebook is embroiled in controversy over election-influencing, “fake news,” and invasion of privacy, the Amram Scholar Series presents top technology writer Steven Levy, speaking via Zoom on Sunday, November 1, at 5 pm, for a close look at the social network company. The editor at large of Wired magazine, Levy benefited from three years of unprecedented access to Facebook’s Jewish founder, Mark Zuckerberg, and Chief Operating Officer, Sheryl Sandberg to write his new book, Facebook: The Inside Story.

Drawing on hundreds of interviews inside and outside of Facebook, his sweeping narrative explores the full story of the company that has changed the world and reaped the consequences. Described by The New York Times as a “front-row seat on voracious ambition,” his exploration introduces us to a teenaged Zuckerberg fascinated by “Civilization,” an empire-building video game, and Caesar Augustus, an authoritarian Roman emperor. The website Zuckerberg soon created as a sophomore at Harvard caught on like wildfire, becoming the largest social media platform in the world. Facebook, Levy says, is a “twenty-first-century corporate Gatsby, careless in its privileges, self-involved in servicing its own needs and pleasures,” even as rogue actors manipulate it for anti-democratic ends.

Widely recognized as one of America’s premier writers on technology, Levy was chief technology writer and senior editor for Newsweek, as well as the award-winning author of seven previous books, including a major history of Google.
