D.C.’s Jewish landscape has changed drastically over the past few years. Jewish 20s and 30s who used to solely live in Dupont or Capitol Hill, have now migrated to such foreign lands as Arlington and Montgomery County. The pandemic ignited this migration, along with a deeper and more widespread search for authentic spirituality. Young Jewish professionals crave a community that’s accessible to them throughout the DMV.

In this search for greater authenticity, 2239 decided to move Metro Minyan, our monthly Shabbat experience, to Washington Hebrew. No longer gathering in downtown churches to celebrate Shabbat, our 2239 participants now grace the Temple halls as they pray during our accessible and musical Shabbat service, and eat and create community together over dinner. If you have not experienced what WHC feels like during a Metro Minyan, join us for the first Shabbat of every month. We would love to pray with you.

Change is good, but we still miss our downtown roots. Enter the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum. With unbelievable exhibits and the restoration of the oldest original synagogue in D.C., this historic prayer space is filled with original pews from most of D.C.’s major synagogues, including one from WHC’s first location at 8th and I. This slice of Jewish history lives and breathes in our city, and we could not be more excited to pray there.

In 2024-25, Metro Minyan will partner with the Museum to bring prayer and worship back to this historic sanctuary. We will still study over drinks and enjoy a Shabbat meal together, but in between, we will welcome Shabbat in a space where we can feel our D.C. Jewish ancestors praying alongside us. 2239 aims to be uniquely Jewish and uniquely D.C. We cannot wait for those two sides of our community to seamlessly merge. Space is limited so register early.
