Susan Hanenbaum

Susan Hanenbaum has been a dedicated leader of Washington Hebrew Congregation for more than three decades. She joined WHC in 1978 and was an active member of the congregation, culminating in her election as President, a position she held from 1994 to 1996. She then served as Director of Development before becoming Executive Director in 1997, bringing her leadership, organizational expertise, and deep commitment to the congregation to the professional staff.

As Executive Director, Susan guided Washington Hebrew through a period of significant growth and change, helping strengthen the congregation’s programs, operations, and community life. She remained in that role through 2006, and WHC continues to recognize her as Executive Director Emerita. Her enduring commitment to Washington Hebrew and to the people who make up its community has made her an important part of the congregation’s history and legacy.

Earlier in her career, Susan worked in government, serving as Administrative Director for Congressman Theodore Kupferman of New York. Her career reflects a lifelong commitment to public service, organizational leadership, and building strong communities.
