The Honorable Ann Brown, who served as the Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, will speak with Rick Klein, vice president and Washington, D.C. bureau chief for ABC News, about her work protecting children and promoting child safety, specifically related to gun violence prevention. She will also share how people can continue to make an impact in their community even as they age.
Ann Brown is a distinguished consumer safety advocate and former government official. She served as Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1994 to 2001, appointed by President Bill Clinton and confirmed by the Senate for two terms. During her tenure, she revitalized the agency, gained national visibility for its work through media appearances, and demonstrated exceptional commitment to family and child safety. Prior to her appointment, Brown was vice president of the Consumer Federation of America for 15 years and chaired the board of Public Voice from 1983 to 1994. She also founded SAFE/Safer America for Everyone, a nonprofit promoting consumer and child safety, and has contributed to national publications including Parade Magazine and the Washington Post. In June 2025, Brown joined Gabby Giffords and other advocates for a roundtable on firearm safety, highlighting the impact of her $100,000 donation to Safe Kids Worldwide, which has facilitated distribution of over 36,000 gun locks in high-risk states.
Brown serves on the boards of The Lord’s Place, West Palm Beach Library Foundation, and Palm Beach Dramaworks. Her extensive honors include the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Excellence in Public Service Award, the Champion of Safe Kids Award, the Consumer Federation of America’s Philip Hart Public Service Award, the Government Communicator of the Year Award, and an honorary Doctor of Laws from Smith College, among many others. She earned a B.A. in American Studies from George Washington University (1959), attended Smith College (1955–1958), and graduated from Sidwell Friends School (1947–1955).
