Religious authorities have long twisted holy text to amplify hate, bigotry, and shame. What if their interpretations were fundamentally flawed? What if there were different ways to look at our bodies and human connection, interpretations steeped in love and compassion, that are equally grounded in Judaism’s ancient canon? In Body Politics, students will discover hidden meanings within the Bible’s most ostensibly oppressive texts to show how our tradition meant them to inspire joy, closeness, and love.
What if the story of Sodom and Gomorrah was not about condemning homosexuality? What if the creation of humanity paved the way for gender diversity? What if sex was meant for more than simply procreation? What if Judaism was about love?
Body Politics will champion the openheartedness at the core of Jewish identity, inspiring compassion for all of God’s children.
