Back to Basics

Explore why we do what we do as Jews, find the sources for our traditions, and delve into the origins for these ideas with Back to Basics.

Taught by Gerdy Trachtman, retired WHC Religious School Associate Principal, you’ll find yourself ready to dig deep and find a closer connection with Judaism. Concentrating on the holidays, life cycle events, history, theology, Jewish religious movements, Torah laws, the Mishnah, the Talmud, and Kabbalah, we’ll uncover the answers to the “why” behind Judaism. Together, we’ll look deeper and discover answers to questions we might never have thought to ask.

Former students have raved about her classes with comments like:

"Taking Gerdy's Back to Basics course these past two years has had a major impact on my life. I find myself looking at situations and people in a very different way."

“I am currently enrolled in Gerdy Trachtman's Back to Basics Class for the second time, because there is so much to learn, and there is no better teacher than Gerdy. Gerdy's passion for teaching and Judaism is contagious and has inspired me to want to learn everything about Judaism. I find myself feeling so much more connected to my heritage, Israel, Judaism and Washington Hebrew Congregation. I can't rave enough about the class!!”

"Being Jewish is an essential part of my identity, but I never had the understanding of Judaism I wanted. Gerdy's class has given me the opportunity to learn all aspects of our religion. I look forward to the class each week, knowing I will learn something new and it will build on previous knowledge. Gerdy is a wonderful teacher, whose enthusiasm and encouragement make learning an exciting, satisfying and enormously enjoyable experience. I can't wait for next semester!"
