This fall, Cantor Mikhail Manevich, WHC’s Cantor Emeritus, is sharing his love of music with us in a new way. In a three-part online miniseries, Cantor Manevich is exploring the connection between music and spirituality with three different musicians—each of whom is not only a world-renowned artist but also a personal friend.

In conversations that are both intimate and insightful, they discuss how music touches both the musician and listener, how its power can make us better people, and the role it has played in their unique friendships—some of which began in childhood. Segments of the musicians’ performance videos will accompany the discussions giving us yet another lens to understanding the impact of the music on our lives.

Thursday, November 5, at 7:00 pm on Zoom

Cantor Manevich will be joined by clarinetist Julian Milkis for the second discussion in hisbseries. The only student of clarinet legend Benny Goodman, Milkis possesses a unique, branded sound, virtuosic technical ease, and musical imagination. Called “… simply the best clarinetist in the world” by Moscow independent newspaper Nezavisimaya Gazeta, his distinctive interpretations and artistry have captivated critics and audiences worldwide.

With an extensive amount of music written expressly for him, including a number of concertos, Milkis has had the honor of working with iconic music personalities, including Giya Kancheli, Olivier Messiaen, and Mieczyslaw Weinberg. He is one of the leading voices for his instrument in the field of jazz and has collaborated with jazz pianist Dick Hyman, a former bandmate of Benny Goodman, who transcribed several of Goodman’s classics and wrote and dedicated Ragtime Concerto especially for him.
