Shabbat Dinner with Nell & Ed Shapiro

The Shapiros invite you to join them at their home for Shabbat at the Shapiros' — a warm, casual Friday night dinner at their home where members of the WHC community can connect and get to know each other.

Good Food. Good People. Good Conversation.

Whether you are new to Temple life or have been involved for years, Nell and Ed would love to celebrate Shabbat with you.  You will meet new people, discuss what connects you, and share what you find meaningful in Temple life and what might make your experience more fulfilling. All this while enjoying good food, good wine, and good company!

There's no cost to participate, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We have some answers …

Do I have to be a member of Washington Hebrew Congregation to participate?

No! The dinners are open to all members of our WHC family including our ECC families, and 2239 Young Professionals community.

How much does this cost?

It’s free!

I’m not very active at Temple. Are these dinners just for people who are really involved?

No! In fact, we are glad you are interested in signing up. These dinners are a great way to get to know others at WHC in a relaxed, small group environment.

So, are these dinners primarily for new or less involved members?

Nope. The Shapiros' monthly dinner table is a wonderful mix of longtime and new members, WHC staff, teachers, and ECC parents (who may not be Temple members). Some guests are actively involved and have held leadership positions and others simply attend High Holy Day services. All adults are welcome. You might discover that the person sitting next to you was your college professor, grew up in a town next to yours, or has the same taste in music. We encourage you to sign up and find out.

I completed a registration form, now what?

About a month before the dinner, you will receive an email confirming your registration. In rare cases, the email might come sooner to inform you that the dinner is at capacity and give you the option to be added to our waitlist or register for a different dinner. About one week before your confirmed dinner, you will receive a second email with the address and additional details.

I registered, but now I have a conflict and cannot attend.

This happens. Please send an email to as soon as possible to let us know. We will remove you from the list of attendees, and you can register for another date if you wish.

I have little kids and getting a babysitter for a Friday evening is difficult. May I bring my family?

Dinners at the Shapiros' home are just for adults, but Nell and Ed also host at least one family-friendly Havdalah BBQs where your children are most welcome. We hope you will join us!
