:: Planned Giving
Helping Sustain WHC for Generations to Come
As many generous members of WHC have learned, a planned gift helps
both the Congregation and the donor. The Congregation is able to
pursue its mission. The donor is able to reduce or eliminate taxes,
increase income, pass assets on to children or grandchildren,
utilize nonliquid assets or meet a variety of other personal estate
planning or fiscal goals.
There are several ways in which you can maximize benefits to WHC
and, at the same time, to yourself.
- Gifts and Bequests of Cash
– The majority of gifts and bequests to the Congregation are
made in cash. If you make a gift during your lifetime, you may
be entitled to an income tax deduction. If you make a bequest
by Will, your estate will be entitled to an estate tax
deduction. A bequest can specify an amount or a percentage of
assets to be transferred to the congregation. For many, a
bequest provides the opportunity to make a more significant gift
than is possible during their lifetime.
- Charitable Remainder Trust
– You and your financial institution set up and administer a
trust that distributes a percentage of its value each year to
you. Upon the end of the designated time period, the remaining
assets in the trust would be gifted to Washington Hebrew
Congregation. This can be a beneficial vehicle to avoid capital
gains taxes and/or receive a tax deduction now, and also to
generate income for yourself and for the congregation both
during your life and as your legacy.
- Life insurance, IRA, or
Pension – You may designate Washington Hebrew
Congregation as a beneficiary of one of these assets. Most
often, all that is required is to name the congregation on the
beneficiary line when you sign up for or modify your retirement
plan. In addition, there are different options for using a life
insurance policy to benefit yourself and the congregation during
your lifetime.
Through careful planning you may be able to realize income and
estate tax savings. Some giving methods are more advantageous than
others to achieve your particular objectives. It is important that
you seek the advice of your attorney or tax advisor before making
any gift.
A planned gift, such as a bequest or
charitable trust, is an investment in the future of Washington
Hebrew Congregation and can also be advantageous to you, your family
and your estate.
