Jewish Life, Jewish Home

“…and so our L’Chayim initiative will encompass learning and celebration of Jewish living; it will be taught mostly by you, members of Washington Hebrew Congregation, who simply and beautifully have embraced Jewish life – each is an opportunity to refresh the soul and engage with fellow Jews. By ‘Doing Jewish,’ we enrich our own lives and protect that which is precious to us – our Jewish future….”

- Rabbi M. Bruce Lustig
From Rosh Hashanah 5767 Sermon

We are delighted to present once again, our L’Chayim Initiative. The hundreds of people who attended past sessions were very impressed and thoroughly enjoyed both the programs led by fellow congregants and the opportunity for fellowship.

Below, we have included our early fall offerings for L’Chayim; the remainder of the year’s calendar will be posted on our website. If you are interested in hosting L’Chayim in your home, or would like to share your special interest with fellow congregants, please feel free to contact Rabbi Lustig’s office or me.

The L’Chayim Initiative will take on a new dimension this year as we partner with Theater J and Ari Roth, the Artistic Director of the powerful theatrical presentations at the DCJCC. Rabbi Lustig and Mr. Roth will lead discussions of plays being staged at Theater J with our congregants, inviting leaders from the Jewish and performing arts communities to take part. Discussions will take place at either Theater J or a member’s home. Our first such discussion with be of Lost in Yonkers, which opens at Theater J in late October.

The productions this year at Theater J this will address myriad, critical Jewish issues and raise wonderful questions for discussion. Some of the Theater J productions in the post-play discussion series include: Lost in Yonkers, Mommy Queerest, The Four of Us, Andy Warhol: Good for the Jews?, In Darfur (this will be part of our Confirmation curriculum) and Mikveh.

For information about obtaining tickets for any of these productions, go to www.boxofficetickets.com. Theater J offers all WHC members a special discount to any performance with the code “WHCTEMPLE”. Plan to see Lost in Yonkers before the November 18th discussion.
