Washington Hebrew Congregation

:: Haiti Relief Effort

 It is a time of concern and a time for action. As we read in the Holiness Code on our High Holidays from the Book of Leviticus 19:16, Leviticus 19:16 – literally: Do not stand idly by the blood of your fellow… Our responsibility is clear. The severe earthquake which struck Haiti this week has devastated all aspects of life in this struggling nation. Washington Hebrew Congregation has a long history of generosity when natural disasters devastate communities around the world. Your generosity at this critical time enables us to play a role in recovery efforts and bring healing and hope to those whose lives have been affected. While we know that no amount of money or aid can replace the lives that were tragically cut short, we can feel proud to know that WHC continues our tradition of social responsibility.

Your contribution may be directed to WHC via the website or by check (note: Haiti relief effort). The congregation forwards 100% of such gifts to relief agencies who are providing money, supplies and staff to assist the Haitian community.  We will be once again mounting our efforts to package food through Project Elijah, a program which brings together children and adults to assemble nutritious vegetarian meals for those in need. The congregation's food packaging efforts in the coming days and weeks will also be directed to international agencies that are at the forefront of bringing relief to hunger. These contributions demonstrate that our community stands with theirs and will assist the relief efforts that have sought to bring medical care and safe refuge to those in affected areas.   Shalom,   Rabbi M.
